CAN Invest clients win at the SE100 Awards

The annual NatWest SE100 Social Business Awards, created by NatWest in collaboration with Matter & Co, celebrates the growth, impact, leadership of social enterprises across the UK.

CAN Invest clients, Manor House Development Trust (MHDT) and Change Please both won SE100 awards at the ceremony held on Thursday 19th January.

MHDT received the Impact Award with a prize of £1000 and organisational membership to Social Value UK (worth £500) whilst Change Please received the Trailblazing Newcomer Award with an £1000 prize.

One criteria for the Impact Award is to have an impact measurement score of nine or more on the SE100 index.

Manor House Development Trust on working with CAN Invest

Since 2013, CAN Invest has worked with MHDT on three projects aimed at measuring impact and social value. For each project, a Theory of Change and an Impact Report were produced; in addition to a bespoke impact measurement framework to measure and report on impact for a wide range of beneficiaries. CAN also undertook some volunteer training to build their capability to run focus groups and interviews to gather qualitative evidence.

The work has provided MHDT with a more sustainable approach to impact measurement and management as capability has been developed within the organisation (and the community), enabling less money to be spent on consultancy and CAN’s time to be spent continuing to push MHDT to more sophisticated levels of impact measurement and management. At a strategic level, MHDT have positioned themselves as an emerging leader among London community-based organisations that are truly committed to measuring and communicating the impact they create.

MHDT Project Lead said, “The work CAN carried out on PACT and other evaluation projects provides a strong basis to continue this successful partnership on the impact assessment of future projects.”

As a result of the project work, MHDT have secured large scale (£300k+) funding for further work, which will form the basis of a new partnership between CAN Invest and MHDT over the coming years.

With an impact measurement score of seven or more on the SE100 Index, Change Please received the Trailblazing Newcomer award.

Founded in June 2015, budding social enterprise, Change Please, address the growing issue of homelessness by training homeless people to become baristas. Backed by the Big Issue, its work has been featured on the BBC, ITV News and in The Guardian. The organisation joined the CAN³ floor for rapid growth start-up organisations in August 2016. The panel saw huge potential for Change Please to make fast growth, enabling them to improve their social impact by working with more homeless individuals.

CAN Invest will work with Change Please over two years to help them develop an impact-led strategy for sustainable growth by producing a Theory of Change, an impact measurement framework and a refined business and financial model for growth through provision of long-term tailored support that builds on their initial success and support from CAN Invest.

Change Please's mission is to empower the homeless by providing them with the skills and equipment to become fully fledged baristas

Laurence Higgens, Chief Operating Officer for Change Please said, “We are very happy to receive this award, the recognition of success and support from our partners, especially CAN Invest and CAN Mezzanine.

All award winners will receive a professionally produced film about their organisation for use in PR and marketing material.
